It is no secret that 2020 was kind of a big bowl of flaming garbage. There were so many negative things that happened it is easy to focus on that and allow the negative to overshadow the positive things that happened. 2020 actually brought a lot of positive things to us, it was just hard to rejoice with so many horrible situations popping up. BUT WE ARE IN 2021 NOW! Let’s try to have a positive start to this new year and take a look back at some of our favorite things that happened in 2020. One of the things that I was most excited about was the great games that were released last year. In a time where most of us were home more than ever, having the ability and resources to sit down and play some truly fantastic games was a very positive thing. All though I love playing games on multiple systems, the Nintendo Switch stuck out to me as having the games that were some of the most fun to play last year so I put together tis list of my favorite Nintendo Switch games released in 2020, in no particular order.
*Disclaimer: Some of these games I understand are just ports and were not just switch games, however being such a garbage year, these games where a nostalgic breath of fresh air and I decided to allow them to be on this list.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released on the Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020 and came at a time when we needed it the most. With most of the world in lockdown, the ability to have a fun, bright and playful game where you are able to visit your friend’s islands was the little bit of sunshine, we all needed when the world as at its darkest for some. This was not the first Animal Crossing game that Nintendo released, however it was the first game in the series played by many people, and luckily it is my favorite. The overall ease of play and beautiful scenes made this one of my favorite games of 2020.

Hades
Hades is a rougelike game that was released on the Nintendo Switch on September 17th, 2020. I tend to not like the rougelike genre very much as they seem to be a little more punishing than other similar games such as the Diablo franchise where it’s not so much turn based, and you don’t have a lot of time to work out a strategy. However, Hades is a very addicting game that will have you constantly saying, “one more go”. With each death you are given the ability to learn new ways of playing the game and hopefully do better each time. It is a fun and challenging game that will easily have you losing hours each day.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of my all-time favorite games. I, much like every Zelda fan, was hoping for Breath of the Wild 2 in 2020 even though I pretty much knew it wasn’t going to happen. When Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was released on November 20, 2020 however, it was a nice fix until we get the real deal. Hyrule Warriors is a Dynasty Warriors style game set in the time previous to Breath of the Wild with a large cast of characters and easter eggs. If you loved the Breath of the Wild world, you would love this game.

Super Mario 3D Allstars
I know that this may seem like I am cheating a little bit here, but this collection of games was so good, and I feel so needed that I had to include them. Released on September 18th, 2020 this nostalgic collection was just what I needed to keep me going through the last part of the year. This collection includes Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. I never played much of Sunshine, but I lost days playing Super Mario 63 and years later the same could be said about Super Mario Galaxy. There are still some issues with the camera angles in these games, but I really feel they hit gold here and I can’t wait to see what other games they bring back on the switch!

Doom Eternal
Doom is one of those franchises that I pray never goes away. Released on December 8th, 2020 it was a perfect way to end a year of torment, by killing demons trying to torment us! Doom has always been one of my favorite games to play and now being able to play it on the switch is so much fun. The fast pace action and over the top effects makes playing this game in handheld mode that much sweeter. Some of the enemies in this game are so difficult that if you are a rage quitter, maybe don’t play in handheld mode.
