Despite the dark and gloomy ending to Peaky Blinders Season 5, we have it on good authority (from creator Steven Knight, no less) that Peaky Blinders isn’t done yet, despite the original plan to stop after season 5.
“We were originally going to end it with this series, but I just thought that there’s so many people who are just getting into it now,” said Knight. “It’d be such a shame to stop.”
“We are definitely doing six. And we will probably do seven.”
The new season has, understandably, been delayed due to COVID-19, but the hope is that filming will start in the early part of 2021, meaning that it is unlikely to be on our screen until the end of 2021 at the earliest, particularly as modifications may need to be made to scripts and sets to meet strict COVID-19 protocols in the TV industry.
Is it all over for Tommy?
Fans were concerned that the end of season 5 – where Tommy held a gun to his own head after his failed assassination attempt on fascist leader Oswald Mosley meant the end of the figurehead of the Shelby clan. However, director Anthony Byrne has confirmed that Season 6 will pick up where season 5 left off.
“Yeah, it picks up directly [from season five], the very first image you will see will be back in that field, with Tommy with a gun to his head and then we will move on from there and resolve that amazing moment.”
It just would not be Peaky Blinders without Tommy!
What about Oswald Mosley?
As the series moves into the 1930s, history reminds us that this decade saw the rise of the far right in Europe and the build up to the Second World War.
Actor Sam Claflin, who played Mosley in season 5, has been confirmed for a return in season 6. “It’s such a juicy role, and it’s such a juicy time in history.” he said.
In real life, Mosley married Diana Guinness, one of the Mitford sisters, at the home of Joseph Goebbels, with her friend Hitler as guest of honour. Rumours that Rowan Atkinson has been cast as Hitler have been strenuously denied by the makers of Peaky Blinders.
Director Anthony Byrne said: “There’s a great female character who is new, who is pretty dark. I haven’t seen a character like her in Peaky before… She certainly gives Tommy a run for his money.
“She’s certainly not a protagonist and I don’t know if she’s an antagonist. It’s similar to Mosley…she has a similar ideology.”
Michael and Gina
Perhaps now better known for her starring role in hit chess-themed series ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ Anya Taylor-Joy will return as Michael Gray’s wife Gina. The scheming pair try and fail to take over the Shelby Company Ltd, and Michael’s mother Polly resigns.
Season six will dig deeper into Gina’s family background.
“Well Gina is obviously American, and she comes from quite an influential American family, who are not overtly a crime family, but there’s a lot of grey there and that’s sort of teed up to be delved into in the next season.” said Byrne.
Back from the dead?
In season 5, we saw the comeback of Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy), apparently from beyond the grave. But which characters can we expect to see back from the dead in season 6?
Visions of Tommy’s late first wife, Grace, have increasingly haunted him during the show’s development. But can we expect to see a return of the love of Polly’s life, Aberama Gold (played by Aidan Gillen)? Steven Knight certainly regrets killing him off.
And can we expect to see a reconciliation between turbulent couple Arthur and his wife Linda in season six, despite her fleeing after being shot by Polly for threatening to kill Arthur? We will just have to wait and see!
Black and gold
Watch out for some mysterious symbolism in season six, and a makeover for the Garrison pub.
According to Anthony Byrne: “Black and Gold are two colours that run thematically through S6 and I wanted to layer them anywhere I could that made sense to the locations or the characters who would be in those locations. As to the significance and themes that black and gold represent, well… you’ll just have to wait and see. But I was really happy with the way the set looked at this point and we spent a lot of time on the wallpaper, the embossed filigree and getting the right tone of the gold and the black.”
Celebrity rumours
As well Rowan Atkinson, rumours abound about celebrity cameos abound – everyone from Imelda Staunton to Snoop have been linked with the show, as well as Samuel L. Jackson, Julia Roberts, and Brad Pitt. They are all just rumours for now…
Something to look forward to
Although there is plenty of speculation about season 6, the anticipation is certainly part of the thrill. Whether it hits our screens by the end of 2021, or whether we must be patient and hold on until the start of 2022, one thing is for certain – it’s going to be well worth the wait!
